Book Layout & Design for Family Histories or Memoirs

Support for the editing, layout, and publication of family histories, memoirs, and genealogical projects – from private archives to printed books and companion websites.

Family histories, life narratives, and private archives deserve a form that does justice to their content. Not every body of material begins as a book – texts, photographs, notes, and typescripts are often scattered across folders, boxes, or digital files accumulated over many years.

Through the work on my grandfather Josef Haas’ biography, I have followed such a path myself: from a private typescript preserved in the family archive to a carefully produced, thread-sewn hardcover book. The focus was not on contemporary design trends, but on readability, restraint, and respect for the original material.

Alongside my private work on family and archival projects, I have many years of professional experience with printed publications, book layout, and the development of websites. This background informs my approach to genealogical and biographical projects, particularly where text, images, and digital presentation need to be considered together.

I am happy to support other family researchers, descendants, or editors in bringing their own materials into a form suitable for publication – from the initial structuring of sources to the release of a printed book and an accompanying website. The site you are currently visiting is an example of such a combined documentation.

Possible steps in this process may include:

  • Digitization and structuring of existing materials
  • Careful editorial revision and contextual annotation
  • Typographic book layout for print and PDF editions
  • Preparation of print-ready files
  • Concept and implementation of a companion website

Every project is different. Accordingly, any collaboration begins with an informal exchange about the available material, the intended scope, and the desired outcome.

If you have questions or are considering your own book or documentation project, you are welcome to get in touch.
